Everything takes time. When I arrived here a year ago, I thought it would be so easy to ask around for a horse to ride. Well, the asking itself did turn out to be easy. It was the receiving that turned out to be difficult. A few weeks ago I thought I had finally found my guy. I had known him to be a member of the tourist association I work with; and he also happened to be a horse owner. He offered to show me his horses and take me riding, and after meeting his two beautiful Peruvian Pasos, I was hooked. The problem was, when I arrived to go riding at our scheduled time a few days later, he was nowhere to be found. His mother told me he had gone off to Lima. When I arrived back at my house, my host parents saw the downtrodden look on my face and tried to console me by saying they weren’t even his horses, and they would find me another horse to ride. Back to square one.
I wasn’t standing on square one for very long. My host dad brought me to talk to another guy, who also happened to be a member of the afore-mentioned tourist association. The deal would be S/.10 per ride. Being equivalent to about $3, that seemed like a bargain to me. Seeing that deal turn from idea to reality…priceless.
